Many ×īŠĀŠÓ°ÉŌ““ traditions date back years, even decades.
The campus Mawioāmi, or pow wow, has only been an annual campus happening for three years now, but itās built on a tradition dating back centuries, and represents one of the more colourful and vibrant days of the fall season.
The word Mawioāmi, translated from Miākmaq, means āgathering.ā Itās meant as a welcome, a means of prayer, and community event ā one thatās open to everyone at Dal.
The event carries the theme āThis is our way,ā connecting with the idealism of the aboriginal community, and is sponsored by the Aboriginal Health Sciences Initiative, the ×īŠĀŠÓ°ÉŌ““ Native Student Association, and ×īŠĀŠÓ°ÉŌ““.
There will be dancing, drumming and traditional meal, which kicks off the festivities at 11:30 a.m. That will be followed by a grand entry onto the Studley Quad at 12:45 p.m. and a flag raising shortly thereafter. For the rest of the afternoon, the quad will be filled with dance and song. (Rain location is in Studley gym.)
